16 A Dance

We returned to the London Olympic Stadium at the same moment we’d left it. After using distraction spells on a couple of security guards, we were able to watch the rest of the ceremony, right up to the moment the giant cauldron was set alight in the center of the stadium. It was an amazing show, helped in no small part by the collective energy of the crowd. Everyone was predisposed to have a great time, which of course massively increased the likelihood that they would. The power of choice in action.

Although it was chaotic in the tunnel by the time we went back to look for Pippa, we were fortunate enough to bump into her in the doorway of the changing room where we’d first met.

“Watch it, mate,” she said good-naturedly, patting Luca on the shoulder. “Hey,” she added, recognizing him, “IT guy. You came back. Marcus, right? Did you make up with…” She spotted me standing behind him and gave me a dazzling grin.

“Hi, Pippa,” I said. “Is your invitation still open?”

“What invitation?” asked the girl behind her. “Pippa, you’ve been holding out on me. Where did you find these guys?”

“Around,” she said. “And don’t get your hopes up, Bianca. They only have eyes for each other.”

Bianca pushed Pippa on the shoulder. “Get lost,” she said. “I was joking. What do I have to do to prove to you I’m serious?”

Pippa shrugged. “I don’t know. Not flirting with everyone we meet would be a start.”

“Thanks for the stereotyping. You won’t be happy until I wear a bloody blindfold,” said Bianca. Her short dark hair had streaks of silver painted through it that caught the light when she turned her head. For a few awkward seconds they didn’t say anything, and neither did we. Other dancers gave us curious glances on their way out of the changing room.

“Maybe we should leave them to it,” I suggested, leaning into Luca.

“No,” he said, turning so that he was speaking into my ear, his voice low. “We should help them. According to Bianca’s life path, this is her last chance with Pippa in this incarnation.”

“Always on duty, huh?” I replied.

“Don’t tell me you didn’t look.”

“OK, fine. Let’s help. I saw it too. They’ll graduate together if they can make their relationship work. It’s the only remaining lesson for both of them.”

“I’m impressed,” said Luca. “You’re getting faster.”

Bianca had her hand on Pippa’s arm. “Come on, Pip,” she said. “I’m sorry. It was a bad joke. You promised we could give this a shot. We’ve got no more rehearsals for a whole week.”

“Yeah. OK. I guess.” She flicked her gaze in Luca’s direction. Does she regret asking us along?

“Amicalis,” said Luca.

Mutual friendliness enveloped us like an invisible warm glow. I knew it was a spell, but there was still no resisting it. I grinned at the two girls. “Is this OK? Can we come with you?”

“Well… yeah,” agreed Pippa, smiling back. “Of course it’s OK.” She linked arms with Bianca, who whispered something in Pippa’s ear that made her giggle.
